| Obverse description | Central shield bearing the Carafa family arms — barry of six, a hallmark of the Carafa heraldic tradition — surmounted by the papal tiara and the crossed keys of Saint Peter, all set within a beaded inner border. The pontifical insignia are rendered in a bold, stylized manner characteristic of mid-sixteenth century Roman hammered coinage. The circular legend is divided across the left and right fields, reading ·PONT·MAX· and ·PAVLVS·IIII·, identifying the issuing pontiff as Pope Paul IV. |
