| Obverse description | Central field displays the heraldic achievement of Cardinal Carlo Rezzonico, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church during the sede vacante of 1774, comprising a quartered coat of arms surmounted by the papal umbraculum (ombrellino) with its characteristic striped canopy. The shield is flanked by the crossed Keys of Saint Peter, with the ornate galero and tasselled cordons of a cardinal's hat draped to either side. The circumferential Latin legend SEDE٠VACANTE٠MDCCLXXIV arcs around the periphery, with a finely milled border encircling the entire design. The composition reflects the standard iconographic programme of Papal sede vacante coinage, emphasising the interregnum authority of the College of Cardinals. |
