Sede Vacante coinage was struck during the vacancy between papal reigns, administered by the Camerlengo — the Cardinal Chamberlain responsible for certifying the pope's death and governing the Church until a successor was elected. In 1730, that office was held by Annibale Albani, nephew of Clement XI, whose name this issue bears. The vacancy followed the death of Benedict XIII in February and lasted until July, when Clement XII was elected after a contentious conclave of over four months.
