Obverse description Right-facing bearded bust of Emperor Menelik II, wearing a traditional Ethiopian crown (qob'e) adorned with horizontal bands and decorative elements, with cloth ties falling behind the neck and a beaded collar visible at the truncation. The portrait is rendered in high relief in a naturalistic style by engraver Lagrange, whose name appears incuse in the lower exergue. A circular Ge'ez legend surrounds the effigy, reading the imperial titulature, with the engraver's name LA GRANGE inscribed along the lower border. The coin features a toothed border encircling the entire design.
