Obverse description A large princely crown occupies the upper portion of the field, flanked by the date 1617 on either side. Below the crown, a four-line Latin legend reads GABETHLEN / D·G·PRIN· / ·TRAN·, identifying Gábor Bethlen as Prince of Transylvania by the grace of God. A small mint mark or ornament appears at the base of the legend. The lettering is bold and characteristic of early seventeenth-century hammered coinage.
