Obverse description Central depiction of the Magdeburg city arms: a stylized fortified gateway with towers and battlements, rendered in the heraldic manner typical of late sixteenth-century German municipal coinage. The date 71 (for 1571) appears within the field above the gate. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading MONE. NOVA. MAGDEBVRG., identifying this as a new coin of Magdeburg. The overall design is characteristic of the hammered Groschen coinage issued by the city during the reign of Emperor Maximilian II.
