Péronne fell under German occupation in late August 1914 and remained so until March 1917, when retreating forces largely destroyed the town. This franc was issued in 1915 while the commune was behind enemy lines — a French local authority printing emergency small change under occupation, which makes the continued use of a Lille printer logistically curious, as Lille itself was also under German control from October 1914.
L. Danel was one of the largest commercial printers in northern France and had supplied municipal and commercial printing across the region for decades before the war caught up with it.
