Comments

Prisoner of war cage canteens operated under the administrative framework established by the Geneva Convention of 1906, which required detaining powers to provide canteen facilities to prisoners. France issued scrip of this type for use within individual cage enclosures — temporary holding areas distinct from the more permanent camps — where captured soldiers could purchase tobacco, food supplements, or small sundries. The scrip had no validity outside the cage and was surrendered or destroyed upon a prisoner's transfer or repatriation.

Cambridge 4887 is thinly documented. Attribution to a specific cage or military region has not been firmly established in the literature.
