Montfort-sur-Meu, a small Breton market town, hosted a prisoner-of-war depot under the French 10th Military Region during the final years of the First World War. These locally-issued fractional notes were an internal necessity — standard coinage had effectively vanished from circulation across France by 1917, hoarded or melted, leaving military installations to print their own small-denomination scrip for canteen and camp transactions.
The issuing authority was not a bank but a military administrative body, which places this firmly in the category of emergency bons de nécessité rather than conventional currency.
