Obverse description Bare-headed effigy of King Leopold I of the Belgians in left-facing profile, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair swept back in naturalistic curls. The portrait, engraved by Léopold Wiener, is set against a smooth, flat field. The circumferential legend reads LEOPOLD PREMIER ROI DES BELGES, disposed along the upper periphery to either side of the bust, with the date 1859 placed in the lower exergual area beneath the truncation. The coin is bordered by a bold milled rim of raised beads.
