Additional information

Switzerland's switch to copper-nickel for this denomination in 1968 was driven by the same crisis hitting mints across the developed world: the spot price of silver had risen to the point where the metal value of coins was exceeding their face value. The old .835 fine silver francs were being hoarded and melted wholesale. Bern acted quickly, retiring the silver type and introducing this alloy with minimal public fanfare — a quiet, practical decision that has kept the design in uninterrupted production for over five decades.
