The Chambres de Commerce emergency notes issued across France from 1914 onward filled a gap created almost overnight when coin hoarding stripped small denominations from circulation within weeks of mobilization. The Gers chamber was among the earlier provincial issuers, and printing locally — Bouquet & Cie were based in Auch, the departmental capital — meant the notes reached circulation quickly without depending on Paris capacity, which was under considerable strain.
The JP reference spans multiple varieties across the series, distinguished primarily by date and serial block differences. Collasson's engraving work gives the notes a crisper impression than many comparable provincial issues of the period.
