French chambers of commerce were authorized to issue small-denomination emergency notes from 1914 onward as wartime metal shortages made coins effectively disappear from everyday commerce. Grenoble's chamber was among the more prolific provincial issuers, and the 1 Franc series ran through multiple printings to meet sustained demand. The involvement of Farcy and Coquand — both locally based — kept production entirely within the Grenoble printing trade, an unusual degree of regional self-sufficiency for a wartime auxiliary issue.
JP#63-20 and #63-21 denote distinct printings within the same type; minor typographic differences distinguish them.
