Comments

One of hundreds of emergency issues produced by French chambres de commerce during World War One, when the withdrawal of metal coinage from circulation left small transactions nearly impossible. The three-city grouping — Chalon-sur-Saône, Autun, and Louhans — reflects the administrative reach of a single chamber across the Saône-et-Loire département, a consolidation that was purely practical. B. Arnaud of Villeurbanne handled an enormous volume of this work for regional issuers throughout the conflict and into the postwar years, supplying chambers across the Rhône corridor with competently produced but frankly utilitarian bons de nécessité.
