Additional information

French Somaliland's acute coin shortage during and immediately after World War I forced local chambers of commerce across French colonial territories to issue their own emergency token coinage — a practice the metropolitan government tolerated but never formally endorsed. Djibouti's chamber issued this aluminium franc at a moment when shipping disruptions had made the supply of official coinage from France effectively impossible. Aluminium was chosen not for prestige but because it was one of the few metals consistently available in the territory.
