La Mailleraye-sur-Seine sits on a bend of the lower Seine in Normandy, and its sugar refinery — requisitioned during the German occupation — became the economic anchor for a prisoner of war labor kommando attached to it. These camp-issued scrip notes were a closed-currency arrangement: laborers, almost certainly French POWs assigned to the facility under the German Durchgangslager system, could earn and spend within the camp but could not accumulate francs redeemable outside it. The printer, Imprimerie L. Pluvost of nearby Duclair, was a small local press — its involvement confirms this was a purely local production, not part of any centralized POW scrip program.
Yellow paper was a common distinguishing choice for camp currency, reducing the risk of confusion with legal tender in circulation.
