Ali III Bey ruled Tunisia as a French protectorate from 1882 until his death in 1902, and the coins issued in his name reflect the awkward dual-sovereignty arrangement that followed the Treaty of Bardo — French-administered in every practical sense, yet nominally struck under a Husainid bey. The Paris Mint produced this series, and the Arabic dating follows the Islamic calendar rather than the Gregorian, which occasionally causes confusion when attributing specific striking years to catalog dates.
