Djibouti gained independence from France in June 1977, and the Banque Nationale de Djibouti was established almost immediately to replace the currency of the French Territory of the Afars and Issas. This franc denomination continued the pre-independence monetary system in name while severing its institutional ties to Paris — a practical necessity for a newly sovereign state with almost no domestic industrial base, including no mint of its own. The coins were struck in France throughout the series run.
