The Banque d'Émission du Rwanda et du Burundi was a transitional institution created in 1960 to manage the monetary affairs of the two territories following the dissolution of the Belgian Congo's currency union — a stopgap arrangement before each country established its own central bank after independence in 1962. These coins circulated across both territories simultaneously, which complicates attribution of wear patterns to any single national economy.
Belgium's mint at Brussels struck the entire series. The bank itself was liquidated in 1964, the same year this issue ceased production.
