The 1943 Banque de la Réunion 1 Franc (P#34) belongs to a wartime emergency series issued after the fall of France left Réunion — then a colony — effectively cut off from metropolitan banking supply chains. The island had declared for Free France in 1942, which complicated any dealings with Vichy-aligned institutions and made resupply of printed currency from France impossible.
These small-format fractional notes were a stopgap, and most saw heavy use in a tight local economy. Survivors in clean condition are harder to find than the catalog frequency suggests.
