The Free French Establishments of Oceania issued this cardboard note under emergency wartime authority after the fall of France in 1940 severed normal supply lines from the metropole. With no access to conventionally printed currency, local authorities in Papeete improvised — the cardboard composition is not a curiosity but a direct consequence of material scarcity in a remote Pacific territory suddenly cut off from its institutional infrastructure.
Pick 6A is among the more elusive survivors of the Free French Pacific issues, partly because cardboard deteriorates faster than rag paper and partly because these notes circulated hard in a small, isolated economy with no easy replacement supply.
