The Trésor Colonial de la Guadeloupe issued its own fractional notes in 1884 precisely because small coinage was chronically scarce throughout the French Antilles — a persistent problem tied to the low profitability of shipping copper and bronze to distant colonies. These treasury notes functioned as emergency fiduciary currency, redeemable in theory but rarely in practice converted back to coin by ordinary users.
Pick 1A is among the earliest catalogued issues for Guadeloupe as a distinct issuing entity, predating the better-known Banque de la Guadeloupe series by several years.
