Obverse description Right-facing armored bust of István (Stephanus) Bethlen occupying the central field, wearing an ornately decorated cuirass and a feathered Hungarian princely hat. The portrait is rendered in a bold, slightly naive hammered style characteristic of Transylvanian Renaissance coinage. A beaded inner border frames the effigy, with the Latin legend distributed around the periphery reading STEPHA BET D G PRIN TRA, abbreviating his title as Prince of Transylvania by the grace of God.
