Additional information

Leo X — born Giovanni de' Medici — was elected pope in March 1513 at just 37 years old, reportedly remarking to his brother "God has given us the papacy, let us enjoy it." The Fiorino di Camera was the papacy's premier gold denomination, issued from the Camera Apostolica and functioning as the financial instrument of the Holy See rather than ordinary commerce. His pontificate ran the papal treasury into serious deficit, partly through patronage of Raphael and the ongoing construction of St. Peter's, and partly through the sale of indulgences that directly provoked Luther's 95 Theses in 1517.
