Obverse description The papal arms of Alexander VI displayed on a quartered shield set within an ornate quadrilobe frame, surmounted by the papal tiara and the crossed keys of Saint Peter tied with a cord. The Borgia arms — featuring a bull passant in the upper sinister quarter — are rendered in fine relief characteristic of late 15th-century Italian hammered coinage. The circumferential legend in Latin runs along the outer border, separated from the central device by a beaded inner circle.
