Additional information

Wolter von Plettenberg, Master of the Livonian Order, and Archbishop Jasper Linde co-issued this ferding under the joint coinage arrangement that governed Livonian monetary production in the early sixteenth century. Plettenberg had secured the Order's political survival through his decisive victory over Muscovite forces at the Battle of Smolina in 1502, and his subsequent decades of rule — unusually long for a Livonian Master — gave this coinage a degree of institutional stability rarely seen in the region. The smooth shield variety distinguishes this emission from related die pairings catalogued by Haljak, with the rightward child and shading placement serving as the primary classification criteria within the type.
