| Obverse description | The obverse features the royal cypher of James I — the crowned interlaced initials 'IR' (Iacobus Rex) — centrally placed within the field. The cypher is surmounted by a Tudor-style crown of elaborate form. The surrounding legend in Latin reads IACO: D: G: MAG: BRI:, abbreviated from the king's full royal titulature, and is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, characteristic of the hammered copper coinage of this Lennox issue. |
