Obverse description Central device depicts a royal crown surmounting two crossed sceptres in saltire, all rendered in relief within a plain inner field. A beaded border frames the design near the coin's edge. The encircling legend, divided by pellet stops, reads IACO·D·G·MAG·BRIT, abbreviating the royal title of James I as King of Great Britain. The lettering is executed in Roman capitals characteristic of early Stuart copper coinage. The overall composition is compact and bold, suited to the small flan of this Harington-patent farthing.
