Obverse description A portcullis with chains, rendered in a bold Gothic style, is depicted at the center of the coin's field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The portcullis serves as a royal badge of the Tudor dynasty. A legend in uncial Latin characters encircles the design between the inner circle and the outer rim. The overall relief is characteristic of hand-hammered coinage of the early Tudor period.
