Obverse description Uncrowned right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, after the model by Mary Gillick, depicted with hair swept up and tied with a ribbon at the nape, wearing a laurel wreath. The portrait is set within a plain field, surrounded by a continuous beaded border. The circular Latin legend reads ELIZABETH II DEI GRA:BRITT:OMN:REGINA F:D:, with a cross pattée separating the beginning and end of the inscription.

Reverse description A naturalistically rendered wren (Troglodytes troglodytes) perches facing left at centre, its characteristic upright tail and fine feather detailing rendered in high relief, executed by engraver Harold Wilson Parker whose initials HWP appear in the lower right field. The date 1953 is inscribed in the upper field, while the denomination FARTHING curves along the lower portion of the coin. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border.
