Obverse description A royal crown surmounting two crossed sceptres is depicted at the centre of the coin, all contained within an inner beaded circle. The design is rendered in low relief consistent with roller-milled production. A circular Latin legend surrounds the inner circle within the outer beaded border, reading CAROLVS D G MAG BRIT. Privy marks, varying by type, appear on the obverse in association with the central device.

Reverse description A crowned Irish harp occupies the centre of the reverse, enclosed within an inner beaded circle. The harp is depicted with its characteristic curved forepillar and multiple strings, surmounted by a royal crown. The surrounding Latin legend, FRAN ET HIB REX, runs between the inner beaded circle and the outer beaded border. Privy marks appear on this side in types 2 and 3, differing from or matching those on the obverse depending on the specific variety.
