Dost Muhammad Khan had reconquered Balkh only a few years before this piece was struck, reclaiming the northern territories from the Uzbek ruler Wali Muhammad Khan in 1850. The Balkh mint's copper output in this period was irregular and poorly documented, which accounts for the considerable variation in fabric and striking quality seen across surviving examples of KM#35.
