Additional information

Muhammad ibn al-Ash'ath al-Khuza'i served as governor of Sind under the Abbasid caliph al-Ma'mun during the turbulent years following the civil war between al-Ma'mun and al-Amin. Provincial copper coinage from Sind in this period reflects the practical administrative reality of a frontier region operating at considerable distance from Baghdad — local fulus were struck to facilitate small transactions that silver dirhams could not efficiently serve. Surviving examples from this governorship are scarce, as copper issues from Abbasid Sind were rarely preserved with the same care as silver.
