Additional information

The Isle of Wight is not a currency-issuing authority. These pieces were produced as private fantasy issues — sometimes called "exonumia" or "local coinage" — with no legal tender status under UK law. The X# prefix in Krause's cataloging system designates exactly that: non-standard issues outside the recognized monetary systems of any state.

Britannia was decommissioned in December 1997 after 44 years of service, the decision announced by the Conservative government in 1994 and confirmed under New Labour — a politically charged moment that generated unusual public sentiment for a naval vessel.
