Reverse description Within the copper-nickel centre, a large three-masted sailing galleon under full sail is depicted navigating stylised waves, occupying the right portion of the field. The numeral '1' in a bold serif typeface dominates the left side of the centre, overlapping with the ship's image. The brass outer ring features twelve five-pointed stars around its circumference, and the quadrilingual legend 'TRIAL · PROBE · ESSAI · PRUEBA ·' — denoting the trial or essay nature of the piece in English, German, French, and Spanish respectively — runs along the upper arc of the ring.

Additional information

Andorra did not begin issuing its own euro coinage for general circulation until 2014, following the monetary agreement with the EU signed in June 2011. The 2003 piece is a pattern struck well before that framework existed, produced during a period when Andorra used French francs and Spanish pesetas — and then eurozone coins by default — without any formal issuing authority of its own. Patterns from this liminal decade circulated only among collectors and officials negotiating the terms of eventual monetary inclusion.
