Obverse description The obverse features a right-facing effigy of King Juan Carlos I of Spain, engraved by Luis José Díaz, rendered in restrained relief against a plain field. The legend ESPAÑA arcs along the upper periphery, with the year of issue and the Madrid mint mark (M) positioned in the lower field. Twelve stars of the European Union encircle the portrait, five of which are partially obscured by a band. The royal monogram appears within the design, affirming the issuing authority.
