Part of Spain's military series issued in 1998, this coin predates euro circulation by four years — Spain wouldn't introduce the common currency until January 2002. The "1 Euro" denomination here is therefore nominal, a collector fiction anchored to the projected conversion rate of 166.386 pesetas per euro fixed by the European Council in May 1998.
