| Obverse description | A stylized cartographic representation of the European continent rendered within a rectangular frame, with radiating lines emanating from a central point overlaying the map. The bold legend EUROPA appears in large raised letters across the lower portion of the central design. A beaded border encircles the entire field. The overall composition is stark and modernist in style, emphasizing European unity through geographic imagery. |

This piece belongs to a short-lived French commemorative program issuing silver écu-denominated coins ahead of the euro's 1999 launch — a political gesture as much as a numismatic one, intended to build public enthusiasm for monetary union. France had been producing Europa series coins since 1979, but the 15-nation design reflects the EU's membership count following Austria, Finland, and Sweden's accession in 1995.
The écu itself never became legal tender under the single currency; it was dissolved as a unit when the euro was fixed at parity in January 1999.
