One of thousands of local "euro" tokens struck across France in 1997–1998 as a promotional exercise ahead of the single currency's 1999 launch. Municipalities, schools, and small businesses issued these pieces to familiarize the public with the euro concept — and, frankly, to capitalize on the novelty. Ecole Sainte-Marie in Ligueil, a small commune in Indre-et-Loire, was among the more modest participants: a Catholic primary school rather than a chamber of commerce or regional authority.
These tokens had no legal tender status at any point.
