Reverse description Central field features the large numeral '1' to the left, beside a standing heron holding a fish in its beak, serving as the symbolic emblem of the Lac de Grand-Lieu nature reserve. Below, the denomination legend '1 EURO DE BOUAYE' is inscribed in bold raised lettering across the lower field. An inner circle separates the central motif from an outer border of twelve raised five-pointed stars arranged at regular intervals around the full circumference, evoking the design idiom of European coinage.

Additional information

Bouaye, a small commune south of Nantes in Loire-Atlantique, issued this piece during the mid-1990s wave of French municipal emergency currency — local "euros" produced ahead of the single currency's 1999 launch, used primarily as trade tokens at festivals and marchés. Several hundred French towns minted similar pieces through this period, most in limited runs contracted to private medal manufacturers. The [44] suffix denotes the département number, a common convention among these issues to distinguish municipalities sharing similar names.
