Obverse description The obverse features the third royal seal of 1144, attributed to Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal, rendered in the inner copper-nickel centre. The central device is encircled by an alternating arrangement of the seven castles and five escutcheons drawn from the Portuguese national arms, with the letters of the legend PORTUGAL distributed between them. The entire composition is bordered by the twelve stars of the European Union set within the outer nickel brass ring. The mint mark INCM and the year of issue appear within the design.
