Portugal's escudo had circulated in one form or another since 1911, surviving the fall of the monarchy, Salazar's Estado Novo dictatorship, a revolution, and a democratic transition — only to be retired on January 1, 2002, when the euro became the country's legal tender. This 2001 gold issue was struck specifically as a farewell piece, marking the final year of escudo coinage after nine decades.
The gold composition here distinguishes it from the circulating base-metal 1 escudo of the same period. Gomes reference R 29.42 places it squarely in the commemorative/bullion farewell category INCM produced across multiple denominations that year.
