Additional information

Angola's 1974 pattern series was struck in Lisbon during the final months of Portuguese colonial administration, just before the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974 toppled the Estado Novo regime and set the country's decolonization in irreversible motion. These pieces were never authorized for circulation — the political collapse came too quickly. The Gomes reference catalogues several alloy variants from this aborted series, reflecting indecision at the Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda over which composition to adopt for a currency that would, within months, become obsolete by independence.
