Obverse description Allegorical bust of Liberty facing right, laureate with an olive branch behind the head and draped at the shoulder, engravers' signatures SIMOES and REGO incuse at the base of the truncation. The circular legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA runs along the upper rim, separated from the inner field by a beaded border, with the date 1940 positioned to the right, interrupted by the bust.

Reverse description The Portuguese national coat of arms — comprising the armillary sphere encircling the quinas shield — is displayed centrally, flanked by a decorative wreath composed of olive branches to the left and oak branches to the right, tied at the base with a ribbon. Below the wreath, the numeral 1 appears in large relief in the centre of the field, with the denomination legend ESCUDO inscribed beneath it along the lower rim, all within a beaded border. Small decorative rosettes flank the denomination inscription in the lower field.
