| Obverse description | The note is printed in purple and salmon tones on a fine guilloche underprint. The Portuguese colonial arms vignette appears at upper centre, flanked by the issuer's name arched across the top. The denomination UM ESCUDO is set within an ornate lathe-work cartouche at centre, with four corner medallions each bearing the word ESCUDO, and the place and date of issue BEIRA, 12 de Maio de 1937 printed below alongside two manuscript signatures over their respective title lines. |

The Companhia de Moçambique — a chartered company granted sovereign-like administrative rights over the territories of Manica and Sofala — issued its own currency entirely independently of the Portuguese colonial administration in Lourenço Marques. By 1937, the company was already in visible decline; its charter would be surrendered to Lisbon in 1942, ending four decades of quasi-private governance over a sizeable slice of central Mozambique.
Bradbury Wilkinson had a long relationship with colonial and concession-company issuers across Africa, and the quality of their intaglio work on this series is considerably finer than the denomination might suggest. The 1 Escudo circulated almost exclusively within the company's territory — accepted in company stores and at company-controlled port facilities in Beira.
