| Obverse description | The colonial coat of arms of Portuguese São Tomé and Príncipe occupies the central field, featuring the Portuguese armillary sphere overlaid with the Portuguese royal shield, which bears the traditional quinas and castles. Above the shield, a decorative civic crown composed of alternating towers and battlements is displayed. The territorial name legend S. TOMÉ·E·PRÍNCIPE curves along the upper periphery, while the date of issue appears in large numerals along the lower periphery. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner border. |

São Tomé and Príncipe's coinage in this period was issued under Portuguese colonial authority, with pieces struck at the Casa da Moeda in Lisbon. The islands had no independent monetary system until after the 1975 independence declaration, making this escudo series among the last colonial issues before the archipelago's currency was replaced by the dobra.
