Additional information

Vaison-la-Romaine issued this écu as part of the wave of French municipal token coinages that proliferated in the early 1990s, tied loosely to the European Currency Unit ahead of Maastricht ratification. The town's participation was unsurprising — Vaison had been continuously inhabited since at least the first century BC, and its Roman ruins, including one of the most extensively excavated Roman civilian sites in France, gave local authorities a ready-made identity for commemorative issues.

The département number 84 appears as a locator, not a mintmark in any traditional sense.
