Additional information

Pau Claris was the president of the Generalitat who, in January 1641, proclaimed Catalonia a republic under French protection — a declaration that lasted precisely one day before being revised into an acknowledgment of Louis XIII as Count of Barcelona. The coin honors that moment of maximum political rupture during the Reapers' War, when Catalan institutions broke formally with the Crown of Castile. Issued by the Generalitat in 1993, a period of assertive Catalan autonomy politics following the Franco era, the timing was hardly incidental.
