| Obverse description | Depiction of the ancient Altar of Lugdunum (Ara Lugdunensis), the federal sanctuary of the Three Gauls established at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers. The altar is shown frontally with decorative relief panels on its face, flanked by two tall columns each surmounted by a winged Victory figure holding a laurel wreath aloft. The design is rendered in a neoclassical relief style evoking Roman provincial coinage. The legend ROM ET AVG appears in the lower field below the altar, referencing the dual dedication to Roma and Augustus. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. |
