Obverse description Central field displays the municipal arms of Coutras, featuring the "Puits Henri IV" (Henri IV's well) on the blazon. The peripheral legend reads NODOS VIRTUTE RESOLVO (a motto meaning "virtue overcomes difficulties"), with CORTERATIS (the Gaulish name for Coutras) and the event date 12.13 MARS 1994 inscribed in two lines at the base. The privy mark of the Director General of the Monnaie de Paris, a cornucopia, appears in the lower field alongside the engraver's signature D.PONCE g., attributing the work to Daniel Ponce of the Pessac workshop.

Additional information

Coutras marks the 1587 Huguenot victory where Henry of Navarre's cavalry routed the Catholic League forces under the Duc de Joyeuse, who died in the battle. It was one of the engagements that ultimately cleared Henry's path to the French throne — and, after his conversion, to the Edict of Nantes. The Monnaie de Paris issued this piece as part of its long-running ECU series commemorating significant French historical sites and events, which ran through the early 1990s and was retired ahead of euro convergence.
